A Little About Who and What Keeps us Happy!

Abracadabra triumphantly took to the airwaves in 2002 as the world’s first Digital Radio Station created especially for children and their families.

It’s purpose was to captivate, educate, entertain and offer loyal companionship to every listener kind enough to spare it as much attention as their favourite screen.  It’s passion remains to promote laughter, learning and most importantly, provide many eager ears and sound imaginations a chance to experience not just what they enjoy, but things they never knew existed.

Our original and quaint variety of classical melodies, historic and contemporary  songs, traditional and novel fruits of fiction, educational content, feature literary and musical presentations,  jingles, indents and all other forms of  audio nourishment we insist you should savour has undergone a careful auditioning or production process.

Whether mixed and baked at home…in SMB’s small but inspired studio, or donated by talented songwriters, musicians, authors and actors sharing similar ambitions to reassert Children’s rights, we ensure it matches a philosophy we were proud to conceive, worked hard to develop and aspire to sustain.

SMB is our faithful, mysterious and improbably invisible wizard of waveforms.  Not the sort of waves whose white horses a heroic surfer would gallantly gallop to shore upon, or that sneakily fill your Wellington boots the second you dare turn your back.

Instead, these waves are the angry yells you hear when the surfer in question stumbles from his board, instantly creating a You’ve Been Framed masterpiece.  Or, they might those be vibrations you feel through your feet as the mischievous sea slides up to play its freezing, salty party piece on ten snug toes.

Sometimes, they can even be seen…just take a large rubber band, stretch it a little, perhaps around a box, along a ruler, or over your thumb and index finger, pluck, look and listen.  Not only will you hear a noise best described as…what is it?  A buzz?  A twang?   Anyhow, you will also witness the band shake quickly up and down or from left to right.  If all you can see is a beige blur, loosen a touch and try once more.  The noise or “pitch” should be lower and the band’s movements slower and easier to observe.

What you’re looking at is a visual version of the noise you hear as sound waves travel through the rubber.  If you were actually able to count the number of times the band bounced back and forth you would have measured the “frequency” of the “tone” your sensitive ears detected.  But of course, nobody can count that quickly, which is why we have special machines with wriggly green lines to do it for us.  There are proabably apps for it w

Now, perhaps you understand why Abracadabra considers sound as valuable a form of communication and source of entertainment as any. It can be seen, felt and heard all at once and no matter how long, short, high, low, loud or quiet, no two waveforms are alike.  SMB collects and records thousands of soundwaves and wavelets to compose what makes your smile sweeter every time you tune in or click on.  After boldly exiting your speakers, all share three simple wishes.  A warm but not too noisy welome,  the shelter of a willing ear and appreciation from a mind eager and able to paint their pictures.
